Project Description

Awarding Body

You will learn how to practice and conduct a HAZOP study using various examples of operational plant, equipment and processes.

The purpose of this course is to explain and demonstrate the principles and practices of Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) Studies.

A Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOP) is a systematic tool/methodology used to investigate elements of a process to identify the ways in which process parameters or conditions can deviate from their intended design and therefore create hazards or operability problems.

Two main objects of HAZOP are:

  1. To identify potential hazards in the process, plant or operational system/s. These hazards may include both those relevant to a specific localised area of a process, plant or operational system and those which may influence or effect up and downstream plant
  2. To identify potential operability issues with the process, plant or operational system and, in particular, identify causes of operational disruptions and production abnormalities. An important benefit of HAZOP is that the resulting knowledge, obtained by identifying potential hazards and operability problems in a structured and systematic manner, provides the investigation study team to be more informed when determining appropriate remedial measures and therefore process safety barriers or safeguards.

What will I achieve?

After completing both the HAZOP principles and practices training, you will be able to:

  • Define and understand the tools and processes of hazard analysis
  • List the requiements and essential characteristics of the HAZOP study team
  • Understand the concept and requirements for correct HAZOP study management
  • Define and use the terms and processes required for effective HAZOP studies
  • Identify the lifecycle phases and how HAZOP studies can be utilised at each stage
  • Understand how both batch and continuous processes are studied using HAZOP
  • Conduct and apply HAZOP studies in their practical applications
