Looking to train online? Getting started is so simple. Register, pick your course then pay via our secure online payment system, Stripe.

What can I expect? Once you’ve made a payment, you’ll be emailed confirmation that it has gone through.

The email will provide a link direct to the course you just bought – the course will show as ‘purchased’ on this page.

From there, it’s time to start learning.

The Control of Major Accident Hazards – or COMAH – is a set of regulations aimed at reducing the risk to the public from Major Accident Hazard sites.

These sites store hazardous substances such as petrochemical and petroleum products.

COMAH came into force on 1st April 1999, with further revisions in 2005 which saw the implementation of specific EC directives known as the Seveso II Directive.

Theses regulations replaced CIMAH – Control of Industrial Major Accident Hazards – in 1984

Do employers have to provide personal protective equipment?2017-04-13T18:27:58+01:00
Employer are duty bound to provide “suitable” personal protective equipment to employees who may be exposed to a risk to their health or safety while at work.

Are there any exceptions to this rule? Yes, there is one. This is where the risk has been adequately controlled by other means which are equally or more effective.

The regulations relevant to you are enshrined in the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992.

The accompanying PPE guidance states:

  • Employers should provide appropriate PPE and training in its usage to employees
  • Employees must have the equipment readily available
  • No charge can be issued to workers for the provision of PPE which is used only at work

As an employer in England and Wales, you are responsible for fire safety in the workplace. This is defined under the Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order 2005.

As the ‘responsible person’, you are required to:

  • Carry out and regularly review a fire risk assessment of the premises
  • Tell staff or their representatives about the risks you’ve identified
  • Put in place, and maintain, appropriate fire safety measures
  • Plan for an emergency
  • Provide staff with information, fire safety instruction and training

The Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013, often known as RIDDOR, regulates the statutory obligation to report deaths, injuries, diseases and dangerous occurrences. This includes near misses.

If an incident has happened at your workplace:

  • It can be reported online or;
  • Via a telephone service for reporting fatal and major injuries only

Call the Incident Contact Centre on 0845 300 9923 – opening hours Monday to Friday 8.30 am to 5 pm.

Employers do indeed have a legal duty under the Health and Safety Information for Employees Regulations to display the approved poster.

To comply, you must:

  • Display the poster in a prominent position in each workplace or;
  • Provide each worker with a copy of the approved leaflet
