Health and safety tips: what are lockout and tagout procedures?

Health and safety tips: Lockout and tagout procedures are deployed in industry to ensure that dangerous machines are properly turned off and not restarted before the completion of maintenance work.

Lockout and tagout procedures were established for Control of Hazardous Energy, as denoted by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Lockout procedures

Lockout procedures ensure staff safety during inspection, maintenance or service of equipment. An essential feature of control of work, lockout procedures provide protection by controlling all energy flow to and from the equipment.

A lock or lockout device is fitted to each Energy Source to prevent accidental startup.

Tagout procedures

When it comes to tagout procedures, warning tags are applied to energy sources to prevent machinery from being restarted until the service has been completed.
