What’s that? Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No … it’s … well, a … storage tanker. A 36-year-old artist from Switzerland has opened a can of worms with a piece of unique art constructed within a decommissioned 42-foot-tall chemical storage tank.
From the outside, one could be forgiven for walking by without paying a moments attention. You’d be missing out, though.
Zimoun, the artist behind the exhibition, has created what some critics are dubbing ‘terrifying’. Others, perhaps more fairly, have labelled the sculpture ‘meditative’.
Whatever your take, one thing’s for sure, the tanker has been transformed.
Does exactly what it says on the tin
The artwork is named, creatively, ‘3’29 prepared dc-motors, cotton balls, toluene tank’. The title certainly gives us some clues as to what to expect.
Suspended on strings, cotton balls bounce rhythmically against the walls of the tanker. The result is a myriad of sounds that whir and groan, whilst visually the results are equally impressive.
Zimoun says he wanted to use ‘sound as an architectonic element’. And, like the sound of rain on a tent, it does become therapeutic.
So without further ado, maximise the window, and enjoy our industry making beautiful noises.
