Petroleum training courses FAQ#1: What is ACOP?

Q) Petroleum training courses FAQ#1: What is ACOP?

A) Should the acronym ACOP sound in your ears, know that it simply means an Approved Code of Practice. An Approved Code of Practice – or ACOP –  provides practical guidance on compliance.

Who does a code of practice apply to?

A code of practice applies to anyone who has a duty of care as outlined in the code. This may include employers, employees, self-employed, principals to contracts and owners of high hazard sites, for instance.

Although failure to comply with an ACOP is not an offence in itself, they do have specific legal status and employers or individuals may face prosecution under health and safety law.

Observance of a relevant code of practice may be considered as evidence of good practice in a court.
