The Indian Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas is considering creating a regulator to oversee health, safety and environment practices in the oil and gas sector.
Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister, M Veerappa Moily, confirmed the news at the two-day Global HSE Conference organised by Cairn India.
“I have moved a proposal to have a regulator for health, safety and environment and the Ministry is looking into it,” said Mr Moily.
Mine and oil field safety is regulated by the Directorate General of Mines Safety under the existing system.
Mr Moily explained that his proposed body would be tasked with focussing on the oil and gas sector.
