Back in 1950, 29,000 industrial workers sustained foot injuries. These were the shocking figures presented to Mr Harold Watkinson MP, of the Ministry of Labour at a Press conference in London.
The purpose of the gathering was the introduction of a new British Standard ‘Men’s Safety Boots and Shoes’ specifying minimum requirements for safety shoes and boots fitted with protective steel toecaps.
Confident in the strength of the new safety foot attire, Mr George Denton, chairman of the British Standards Institution Committee on Safety Footwear, arranged a practical demonstration after the conference.
Wearing the protective footwear, he allowed a London double-decker bus to run over the toe of one of his shoes. With the bus perched on top of his shoe, he calmly untied his laces and slid out his foot.
Reynolds Training Services safety expert, John Reynolds, states that he currently has no plans to incorporate this stunning demonstration of footwear efficiency into his training sessions at CATCH.
