HSE issues revised guidance to protect workers

The Health and Safety Executive has published revised guidance to help employers understand their duties when it comes to protecting the health, safety and welfare of their workers.

The decision to review and update the Workplace Regulations Approved Code of Practice (ACOP) (L24) followed an extensive consultation.

HSE spokesman, Chris Rowe, said the revised guidance would make it easier for employers, building owners, landlords and managing agents to meet their legal obligations.

“Across HSE we are working hard to ensure that employers have access to good quality advice which makes clear what they need to do to protect workers”, stated Mr Rowe.

“The revised ACOP has not only been updated, it will help employers understand the regulatory requirements on key issues such as temperature, cleanliness, workstations and seating, toilets and washing facilities.”

Reclaiming Health and Safety For All

The review of the Workplace ACOP followed initial recommendations by Professor Ragnar Löfstedt in his report Reclaiming Health and Safety For All.

The subsequent amendments put forward in the consultation were both agreed by the HSE Board and the minister of state for responsibility for health and safety.

Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992

The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, which covers a wide range of basic health, safety and welfare issues, applies to most workplaces with the exception of construction sites, ships and below-ground mines.
